January Philanthropy: Where We're Giving

Following are a few of the organizations we have been supporting lately. Where do you like to give? Who do you support with time, money, or in some other way? Post your reply in the comments section and be entered in a drawing for the fabulous Slow Food Guide to San Francisco and the Bay Area. Post your comment by 5pm on Friday, January 16th. A winner will be chosen at random and the book mailed out to our lucky reader this weekend.

I volunteer at my daughter Giselle's school and every year I send donations to Planned Parenthood and the American Cancer Society (in honor of my Uncle James, who died of lung cancer in 1998.) --Liz Davis

Great topic! I'm the volunteer gardener at my church and I am active in the toy and food drive during the holidays.

I run my college's alumni chapter in the Bay Area, and for several years we've held "active citizenship" events to support the community:

* Preparing and serving lunch at Glide Memorial Church
* Native plant restoration at the Presidio through the National Park Service
* Annual free Homecoming event where attendees are asked to bring a canned good for donation to the San Francisco Food Bank
* Currently planning a Renew the Zoo trip at the San Francisco Zoo

I can't miss a chance to plug the agency I work for, Emergency Department Case Management at San Francisco General Hospital. We work mostly with medically fragile homeless folks. (So I'd say I support EDCM with lots of time!)

We're having a Benefit Concert on January 25 at 7 pm at Hotel Utah with lots of great bands. We're also having a raffle with some fantastic prizes(and would love to have more prizes and sell lots of tickets for!). The concert/raffle funds our Patient Benefit Fund, which we use to help our clients get things like CA ID's, birth certificates, medic-alert bracelets, and medication co-pays.
